On Lauryn Hill and Shaking the Vending Machine

- - -

“yes, you support them by buying their product but they owe you nothing.

Well, to be more precise: when we support them by buying their product, they do owe us the particular product we paid for. But after we receive that product we paid for, the transaction is then completed. They don’t somehow keep owing us forever after that..the debt is settled at that point.

If we bought something from them today, and received it, that does not mean they owe it to us to keep making more and more new things to buy, for all eternity. This is the expectation we tend to have of artists, that doesn’t make any sense.

It makes sense, we all want a sense of connection but yet an on-going connection. Is it right to demand this, to me, no.
